For any of you who have used the bead rider, do you think it is as good an upgrade as an actual custom seat upgrade? Thanks, Mike _________________ MBK: 2005 Blue Majesty / "Bluebie"

It is if it keeps your butt happy.
It depends on WHY you're not comfortable. If the actual position/shape of the seat is what's making you uncomfortable, then a seat cover probably isn't going to make much difference. But if it's "monkeybutt" or "butt fatigue" that's limiting your riding comfort, a seat cover could be the perfect remedy.
And since even the most outrageously-priced seat covers (*cough* AirHawk *cough*) is much cheaper than even the least expensive custom seat, I think it makes a lot of sense to try a seat cover first and, if that doesn't do the trick, order a custom seat.
My BeadRider made a big difference for me. I seriously doubt that even the most expensive custom saddle would be much better, short of a totally from scatch, seatpan up, rebuilt seat with shape, foam density/thickness, and materials all tailored personally to me.
At $36 (or even $57 for the Ultimate, which is what I have), I think the BeadRider is a more sensible choice. _________________ "Does this bike make my butt look fast?"

It is, in part, the seating position, but it is more the seat itself is uncomfortable - by that I mean I think it is more uncomfortable than it is ill fitting. It is worth a try. Thanks, Mike _________________ MBK: 2005 Blue Majesty / "Bluebie"

I've been using a BeadRider for the past 30000+ miles. I've pulled it off a couple times thinking perhaps it really doesn't do that much...and immediately realized my mistake.
It doesn't make sense that a layer of wooden beads would be so comfortable, but they work extremely well. I bought mine because I wanted to get out of the water pooling under me when it rained...which it normally does in Seattle. What I found was that it can take a good seat and make it really comfortable. I can ride all day long on my seat and not have problems.
I also found that while the air flow through it is great on a hot summer day...it is frigid in the winter. My solution was to apply black duct tape along the sides and over most of the top. I get the benefits of the cushion, without freezing in the cooler months.
If you are interested in a seat cushion, here are two links you might find interesting:

In this review, the beaded seat cushion came out second only to the Airhawk.
Comfort Line Wood Bead Seats - $20

This is actually the seat cushion in the above review. While I like my BeadRider, if it ever comes apart, I'll probably buy one from these people. At $20, it is around half the price of a BeadRider and does the same thing.

I've been using one of these for a year now and it has held up just fine. Definitely helps in the summer on long trips. _________________ wilmo

I bought a used Airhawk on ebay for $90. It works extremely well and I just thought my butt deserved the best!

I almost bought an AirHawk instead of my BeadRider until I started reading about some of them developing leaks. I decided not to take a chance and got the less-expensive BR. I hope yours lasts a long time. I'm still curious about how much better the AirHawk is than the BeadRider (it certainly gets rave reviews) and may buy one in the future. _________________ "Does this bike make my butt look fast?"

I've been using a beadrider for about 40,000 miles now. I can't see how a custom seat would be more comfortable than perfectly comfortable.
Your butt may vary. |

Cool site and interesting idea, but, with all due respect, you'd probably have $20 of more in beads (figuring you'd need a couple hundred or so) and I have no idea how to get them together - be cheaper just to buy it -- although, granted, not as satisfying, nor as fun, nor as colorful. This discussion of beaded seats has me interested. So what size does the majesty take? _________________ Bill Adams

Here's a photo of my 14"x14" BeadRider (Ultimate -- the beads are ceramic instead of wood) on my 2008. _________________ "Does this bike make my butt look fast?"

I love my AirHawk - I've had it for 3 years and I can't remember that last time I put air in it. It is pricey, but you can use it on other bikes too. |

Hi all,
Now I bought the Airhawk cushion and do like it a lot, found that when the temps start going up and the seats a hot one the air inside does require me to fiddle with it some, now not a lot but I do have to add or take away, I have at times got tired of messing with it and contemplated on buying one of those bead seats, and reading these threads I may buy one for me and my wife (pillion seat)..
Maybe less maintenance, now don't get me wrong I love the Air Hawk but I am willing to try something else and this may be the just the thing to do. _________________ O8' Red Majesty
